Over two decades ago, we recognized a pressing need for housing specifically designed to cater to individuals with disabilities. Our focus was on men diagnosed with severe mental illness, as we believed that this type of care could be provided in a manner grounded in biblical principles. We envisioned an environment that would foster community engagement, enabling residents to connect with their surroundings.
We held the belief that God created all beings and everything, and therefore, we reasoned that individuals made by God possess inherent worth that can be discovered. Recognizing that those with severe mental disabilities face unique challenges, we recognized that the very individuals best equipped to assist them in finding their value often struggled to comprehend their needs. Additionally, communities that would provide love and acceptance faced difficulties in welcoming these individuals into their communities.
As we embarked on our journey to fulfill our calling, we soon discovered a lack of expertise and guidance. We encountered numerous unanswered questions that demanded attention. How could we establish a business? What organizational structure would be most suitable? How could we register our business? Where could we secure housing for these men? These questions, and the numerous inquiries they generated, presented an overwhelming challenge.
The process of obtaining answers became a significant undertaking. It involved numerous phone calls, visits to various agencies, interactions with government offices, and extensive web searches. These activities consumed a substantial portion of our weekly time, leaving us with limited resources to complete our plan and embark on the task we felt compelled to undertake. We began to question whether this was indeed our calling and how we could possibly fulfill it.
Upon opening our first home, we found ourselves deeply in debt and exhausted. We had not even welcomed our first resident when we were overwhelmed by the daily challenges of running this ministry. We had never even considered the questions that would arise, such as payroll, tax obligations, hiring and compensation, and equipment needs. These were just a fraction of the questions we faced, and it seemed that everyone had different answers or no answers at all.
As we reflect on this period, we often wonder how we managed to overcome these obstacles. Our organization has grown from a home of ten men to housing for over a hundred men and women. We have also started six other companies to assist in managing the various aspects of our care. We now have a team of employees, houses, vehicles, computers, commercial space, furniture, and many other essential resources. Despite our decades of experience, we still encounter new challenges and questions daily. One of the questions that we continually ponder is about you. What obstacles are preventing you from fulfilling your divine calling? Do you have the knowledge and resources to navigate this journey? Does the overwhelming nature of the task deter you?
We firmly believe that you possess a divine calling and that God has created you to fulfill a specific purpose. If your calling involves creating something, we are here to assist you. We have faced many of the same challenges that you will encounter and have gained valuable experience in answering them. Do you need a website? How do you accept payments? What type of insurance do you require? What organizational structure should you adopt to fulfill your purpose? These are just a few of the questions you will need answers to. Let our community become your support system and help you overcome the barriers that prevent you from walking in your calling. Together, we can explore and address your questions, empowering you to fulfill your divine purpose.
